This is mine and Scotts family tree (well, not completely but I did better than I thought I would!) but im pretty sure it would be of interest to any one else involved in ‘the family’.
Cos its mine and Scotts tree. There are lots of family members missing (2nd cousins etc) to add them would just be far too much work so its really mainly direct descendants ive looked at.
This is something my mum always wanted to do and ive now spent about 3000 hrs doing it and I will still continue with it, on some mysteries, that still need an answer…
So I dedicate this whole thing to my mum, Mary Young (Kelly) who died 20 yrs ago this year.
please let me know what you think or if you have anything you think should be added
There is very little info to begin with in the 18th century as this was all I could get hold of and even that wasn't easy!
Right….
Where do I begin?...
I’ll start with the furthest back I got to, which was almost 300 yrs ago in 1723..
In 1723 mr.Thomas Ferguson was born and he later married Margaret McLagan, who was born in 1730
They had a son, Fergus Ferguson(bizzare unimaginitive name and we shall see this name again) in 1757
On 4 jan 1780 he married a bizarrely named Euphemia Black (sounds a bit like a disease!)
'Euphemia' and Fergus had a son on 18 Nov 1783 called John Ferguson.
John Ferguson married Agnes McFarlane on 21 aug 1794 in Aberdeen.
Johns dad, Fergus, died in 1806. 2 years after Fergus died...John and Agnes had a son..
They called him Fergus(II), This was in Lochwinnoch in 1806
They then had Agnes in 1809.
Getting back to Fergus II.. Fergus II then went and met big Isabella Brown (from haddington)in the summer of 1837 (though it may have been winter, spring or autumn....But he certainly met her at some point)
they then moved to Paisley!
They had their 1st kid.. Robert in 1839 then in 1845 along came… Yup you guessed it…
Fergus Ferguson (III)! Then Sarah in 1847, Andrew in 1851 & who we’re interested in..
Margaret Ferguson in the year 1853...
In the 1851 Census.
Fergus and his family were living at 69 love street, his occupation listed as a ‘hand loom weaver’
in the 1861 Census Fergus and his family were staying at '79 back house' (no idea what or where that is, though it was in paisley somewhere) and he was a 'shawl maker', Isabellas job is listed as a 'sewer of shawls'...
Fergus died in 16th Jan 1879 of 'general debility' and was staying at 44 storie street when he died
in 1881 census 65 year old Widow Isabella and the kids were still living at 44 storie street, no more records of isabella so i assume she died between 1881 and 1891
so now we go back to fergus and isabella's youngest.. Margaret Ferguson..
Margaret Ferguson met matthew whyte
Mathew Whytes parents were William whyte(1819-1871) and erm... a certain Janet.. YOUNG (1821-1900) (couldnt find out anymore about this couple)
Margaret Ferguson married Matthew Whyte on 26th Dec 1871!! They actually married at 44 storie street also, which is where Margaret was living...
Boxing day!! must have been a victorian thing...
on the date of the wedding, 1871, matthews family stayed at 20 sandholes street, Paisley and Margaret was in 44 storie street
Matthew and Margaret, had kids in order.. Fergus in 1874, Matthew in 1876, William in 1879 and James in 1881.
in 1881 census they were staying at 26 Inkerman, this is where all the kids were born also,
in 1891 census they were staying at 52 George street, Matthew was a 'shale miner' and fergus was also a shale miner even though he was only 17, his dad must have put a word in for him..
52 George street, as it is today
we're going to jump back in time for now to find out about 'teen miner' Fergus wife to be, Catherine 'Kate' Hughes.. We'll be back with Fergus soon enough..
back in Ireland, Patrick Hughes married Bridget McGill, they had James Hughes in 1849 in county Fermanagh (this is now in Northern Ireland, Enniskillen is the major town there)
Still in Ireland Edward O'Brien married Ellen Dowd and they had Mary O'Brien in 1849
for some unknown reason the o'brien family came over to scotland sometime before 1870, they also seem to have James with them, as they all stayed at 27 high street, Paisley (now H.Samuels the jewellers) with James and Marys 1st son James. Mary and James were unmarried at the time so maybe it was the shame that drove them out of ireland!
This is 27 High street where the O'Briens lived...
James Hughes was a stone mason
in the 1881 Census Marys dad. Edward, was dead but Ellen was still there, James and Mary had married. Then they had James (1871), Ann (1873), Ellen (1875), Catherine (1876) and Mary (1879) they were staying at 99(or 9)queen street in Govan
in 1891 census they were staying at 19 john street and Elizabeth (1885). Isabella (1887) and John (1889) thats 8 kids in total plus Ellen who is now 66 years old..
Thats 11 people in total all staying at a flat in john street!
James Hughes died in 1903 in the 'infectious diseases hospital in Paisley..
Catherine then stayed at 1 Ralston square
Catherine Hughes then met our 'teen miner' Fergus Whyte and married him on 29th December 1899 (another xmas wedding)
They had Matthew, Fergus and Catherine was pregnant with Mary when...
Whilst they were staying at 10 Greenhill road(they stayed there from 1901- 1904), Paisley and Fergus was working at a fireclay mine, Spiers & Gibb, on Clark street.
I assume he was on night shift when the roof caved in one night,Fergus took an oil lamp to investigate. He climbed the rubble and naked flame from the lamp ignited a gas which had appeared. There was an explosion and Fergus was badly burned to the head, chest and arms. The explosion happened on 7th May and Fergus died in hospital on 15th May 1904 while his wife, Catherine was pregnant with Mary (my great gran).. Mary was born in August 1904 just 3 months after her dads death
The above is a story from the paisley daily express on the 16th May about the accident,
As she was now widowed Catherine was entitled to apply for money from the government through the 'poor list' (the social)
Catherine was given a total of £192 to keep her and 3 kids
This money lasted them for 17 months!
They moved around a fair bit.. After greenhill road they went to 19 Lady Lane, Paisley(1 up left), 15 John st, Paisley, then 18/05/04 they moved to 18 Lady Lane (1 up right), goth the cash application, then moved to 17 lady lane. Thats 3 different addresses in Lady Lane alone.
18 & 17 Lady Lane as they are now...
It was apparently common at this time to be shuffled around so much
Then it was off to 3 Silk street in 1905..
Catherine later married Robert Doyle, Robert Doyles previous wife, Mary Lynch had died. He had 5 kids from his previous marriage.
They had Catherine (2/6/08) at 38 graham st in Johnstone, Annie (19/4/12) who was born at 16 Lady Lane, Paisley and Rose ann(2/8/13) born at 6 Smith street. These kids are what people talk about when they mention 'theyre from the Doyle side' meaning they refer to a Catherine 'Doyle' child as opposed to a Catherine 'Whyte' child.....
Robert Doyle somehow lost a foot in work so he applied for money from the govt. He was given 6 shillings a week.
Robert Doyle died sometime after 1916, he was sent to Paisley asylum and died around a week later..(?!?!)
Catherine went onto a 3rd marriage with William Campbell. they were both in their 50s at this point, Catherine Hughes/Whyte/Doyle/Campbell died in 1955
Cathy and 3rd husband william Campbell
4 generations here..Catherine Hughes in the centre in 1950.. Shes pretty scary looking and she had good reason to be scary! Also her Daughter Mary Whyte(R) and her daughter Annie(L) with daughter Mary and Cathy with her twins Gordon and George
Now its onto the Malcolms
Robert Fyfe married Margaret Watt around 1825, they had a daughter Mary Fyfe in 1827,
Mary Fyfe married William Malcolm in 1846 in Glasgow and they had a son called Andrew Malcolm in 1870 this was in Greenock. Mary Died in 1897 (aged 70)
Andrew Malcolm met and married Annie Johnstone, Annies parents were George Johnstone and Agnes Hamilton. Andrews job was a 'presser cloth works' whatever that involves..
Andrew and Annie (there'll be another Andrew 'n' Annie pairing somewhere..) were married on 9 dec 1891 in Greenock, at time of marriage Andrew stayed at 116 Drumfrochar rd, Greenock, the family had stayed here for at least 20 years and Annie stayed at 3 Dellingburn street, Greenock
Andrew and Annie had 4 kids, Robert(1891), Elizabeth(1897) , George(1898) and finally Gordon in 1903
Gordon Malcolm (a dyers labourer) married the previously mentioned, Mary Whyte in 23/11/1923. Gordon was 20 and Mary was 19, they both worked in the thread mills and Mary stayed at 98 Canal street, Paisley and Gordon was staying at 1 Camphill, Paisley. So they stayed pretty close, as well as working together
They had 7 kids.(dont know the order)Mary, Catherine, George, Gordon, Margaret, William and my gran Annie(1929).. Every one of these kids were named after someone in the family (either that or its a bizzare coincidence) They stayed at 98 Canal street, Paisley when Annie was born in 1923
Gordon Malcolm
Gordon and Mary in 1933 and with their 4 kids at the time, Catherine, Mary, Annie and George, then Gordon on his own
Mary, Annie, Annie, Catherine (all back) Catherine and Mary whyte at front
The Malcolms, only one thats missing here is the elder Gordon.Gordon would have been dead at time of pic...George,Margaret, Gordon, Catherine, William, Mary and Mary again and Annie
Gordon Malcolm died ,possibly of pneumonia, at home in January 1948, in the same year Annie married Andrew Kelly on 27th December 1948, another xmas wedding...
so...Lets get to the Kellys,Owen Kelly (mason) and Sarah Kennedy had James Kelly in 1861,James married Sarah Corrigan on 12th august 1885 in St Mirren church ,Paisley. Sarahs parents were Philip Corrigan (coal miner)sarah was born in 1866
James stayed at 18 great hamilton street, Paisley and Sarah stayed at 6 carlisle place, Paisley. their son Felix Kelly was born in 1895 at 7 stock street, Paisley. His mother, Sarah died 3 yrs later in 1898. they were staying at 18 carriagehill, paisley when she died. James married 'Ann' shortly after this in 1900 and on 1901 census they were staying at 25 great Hamilton street, Paisley.
James Kelly died in 1920. As Felix was 18 in 1913, he would have been able to sign up for the 1st world war.. I found a Felix Kelly who served with the army medical corp. but havent been able to confirm if it is THE Felix Kelly... heres his 'medal rolls index card'
Felix Kelly married Margaret Whitby (could find nothing out about this mystery woman) and they had a pile of kids.. Felix, Isa, James, Margaret, Tommy and Andrew Kelly in 1924
Andrew Kelly met and married Annie Malcolm and they had 6 kids, Mary (1950 named after her gran Mary Whyte), Andrew (1953 named after his dad), Anne (1956 named after Annie Doyle, her great aunt), Catherine ('57 who was named after her aunt Catherine McAllister), Pauleen ('61) and William ('63 called after his uncle William). All named after previous family members except Pauleen
Mary Malcolm with 3 of her grandkids, Catherine Kelly , Gerard McAllister and Mary Carswell
A Young Pauleen Kelly
Anne, Andrew, Mary and Catherine Kelly
3 generations this time, Annie Kelly with Kids Pauleen and William with gran Mary Malcolm (probably taken in Crawford drive)
The full Kelly clan.. Catherine, Anne, Andrew, Andrew jr (the groom), Janette (the bride), Ian Young, William and Pauleen with Annie Kelly and Mary young at front
Mary Kelly married my dad, Ian Young in 1970 and they had Scott almost immediately after the wedding... They then had me in 1972 (Ian)
Andrew married Janette in mid 70s by the look of the above picture, they had Steven Kelly in 1977 (?) Andrew later remarried Pat Smith around 1987 and they had Martin Kelly in 1989
Anne Kelly married Billy Burgess in 1981, Anne and Billy had daughter Claire in 1982
Pauleen Kelly married Johnny McNish in 1979 and they had John shortly after in 1980
William Kelly married Elizabeth and they had 2 sons, Ross and Liam
Anne Kelly(Burgess) died of cancer in 1985, she was just 29. This was the begining of a 'bad' 7 years for the Kelly family...
Andrew Kelly died January 1987. He was 62
Mary (my mum) died on 23rd July 1989, she was 39
Annie Kelly died shortly after in oct 1989, she was 60
Then Andrew Kelly died in an accident at work in 1992, strangely similar to his great grandfathers death, Fergus Whyte.
Well... Thats all for now, I realise ive missed out loads and if you're part of the family and you didnt get a mention, then my apologies but theres only so many hours in a day!
Heres the family tree to print out, ive done it just to my mum Mary Kelly. Ive managed to get back 10 generations..
